Gift Planning
A planned gift to Benton Hospice Service allows you to support our mission to provide compassionate end-of-life care while realizing significant tax savings.
There are many ways for you to meet these goals. This summary may help you identify the best way for you to give--and save.
Gifts of Appreciated Stock
If you own appreciated stock, it is usually more tax effective to contribute that stock rather than cash. You can avoid any capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift.
Gifts of Real Estate
A gift of real estate can also be tax-wise. By making a gift of appreciated property, you avoid capital gains tax, and, at the same time, receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value.
Another possibility is gifting your home, farm, or vacation property so that you and your spouse can continue to use it for your lifetime--and still receive a current income tax deduction.
Gifts of Life Insurance
The gift of an old or new life insurance policy can provide a significant charitable deduction with a minimum expenditure. Check with your insurance agent of tax advisor for details.
Bequests
You may name Benton Hospice Service as a beneficiary of your will or living trust. You may make an outright gift, either as a designated dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. You can also name Benton Hospice Service as a remainder beneficiary to receive funds only after specific sums have been paid to individual beneficiaries.
You can easily add Benton Hospice Service to your current will through an amendment called a codicil; your entire will does not have to be redrafted.
Gift of an IRA
Naming Benton Hospice Service as the beneficiary of all or part of your IRA is particularly tax-effective. In contrast to individual heirs, Benton Hospice Service pays no taxes on IRA withdrawals.
Lifetime Income Gifts
You can also make gifts which will provide an income stream for you or your spouse. This may be particularly attractive if you have an asset of significant value--vacant land, for example--which does not generate revenue. Such a gift allows you to receive a set income, realize charitable tax deductions, and avoid capital gains taxes.
- Charitable Remainder Trust
A charitable remainder trust provides you with a regular income stream, whether a set dollar amount or a percentage of the asset. At your death, Benton Hospice Service receives the remainder. In addition to a guaranteed annual income, you receive tax deductions, no capital gains tax liability, and possible estate tax savings. - Charitable Gift Annuity
This is a contract in which Benton Hospice Service agrees to pay you a percentage of your gift annually for your lifetime. You receive an immediate income tax deduction for part of the gift value, while capital gains are spread out over your life expectancy. This is yet another option for you or your beneficiary to receive regular income for life. - Charitable Lead Trust
A charitiable lead trust pay Benton Hospice Servcie an income for a period of years before you or your heirs receive te trust remainder. This is essentially the reverse of the life income gifts described above. This income from the trust is first paid to the charity. The charity's interest leads the way, hence the trust's name.
Your accountant, attorney, or tax advisor can provide additional information on how to apply these general guidelines to yor particular situation in order to meet your charitable giving goals.
